Washington, DC (November 6, 2006) – Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) today issued the following statement regarding the elections of the Democratic leadership for the 110th Congress:
“I want to congratulate all my colleagues today who were elected to leadership roles within the Democratic caucus. They are all exemplary individuals who are committed to leading this country, and the Congress forward. This is truly a historic time for our country, and under the most diverse leadership team in history, I know we’ll be able to accomplish meaningful change and reform.
“Two weeks ago, the country mandated change in this country, and we will not take this mandate lightly. Under the guidance of Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader-elect Steny Hoyer, and Majority Whip-elect James Clyburn, we enter a new era of open government, of high ethical standards, a new direction for Iraq, and a commitment to serving the American people to the best of our ability.
“I am looking forward to the next session of Congress and looking forward to change for the better. For too many years a prevailing sense of partisanship and political bitterness obscured Congress from actually accomplishing its goals. I am confident that under this new leadership team we will be able to rise above partisan politics to really work for every American.”
The following team was elected this afternoon by the Democratic Caucus:
Speaker of the House – Nancy Pelosi
Majority Leader – Steny Hoyer
Majority Whip – James Clyburn
Democratic Caucus Chair – Rahm Emanuel
