Higher Education Institutions in 15th Congressional district awarded more than $1.7 million
Washington, DC (May 14, 2007) – Today, Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded University of Texas-Pan American, Coastal Bend College, South Texas College, and Texas State Technical College over $1.7 million under the Upward Bound Program. Specifically, the four institutions in 15th Congressional District were awarded the following amounts:
University of Texas-Pan American: $580,258
Coastal Bend College: $633,533
South Texas College: $292,189
Texas State Technical College: $276,599
Upward Bound provides support to students in their preparation for college entrance. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families; high school student from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree; and low-income, first-generation veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
“Upward Bound is an invaluable program that prepares our nation’s most disadvantaged students for the college experience,” said Hinojosa. “These grants will go a long way toward helping inspire and prepare a new generation of graduates who otherwise would not have considered pursuing a post-secondary degree.”
