WALSH ANNOUNCES CONGRESSIONAL NOMINATION SCHEDULE FOR U.S. SERVICE ACADEMIES

(Syracuse, N.Y.)- Congressman Jim Walsh today issued a reminder on his U.S. Service Academy nomination schedule for the Class of 2013.  Young men and women residing in New York's 25th Congressional District interested in seeking a Congressional nomination to the United States Military (West Point), Naval (Annapolis), Air Force (Colorado Springs), or Merchant Marine (Kings Point) Academies are recommended to contact Walsh's office by October 24, 2008, to request an application packet.  The deadline for receipt of all necessary information is November 10, 2008.

Candidates must be citizens of the United States, legal residents of the State of New York and Walsh's Congressional District, and be unmarried and have no dependents.  In addition, they must be at least 17 years of age, but not past their 23rd birthday on July 1, 2009.  Further information can be found at http://walsh.house.gov/academy.shtml.

Walsh uses three selection boards to interview prospective candidates and recommend nominees to the various service academies.  The boards are composed of experienced community leaders who will review applicant files and interview potential nominees during a local Academy Day tentatively scheduled for December at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool.   The boards will base their selections on SAT/ACT scores, class rank, grade point average, high school records, extracurricular activities, leadership potential, motivation, and recommendations.  Only candidates whose files are complete by the November 10th application deadline will be given consideration by the boards.  It is the applicant's responsibility to submit all required information prior to the deadline.

Interested young people seeking a nomination to West Point, Annapolis, Colorado Springs, or Kings Point should write to Congressman Walsh at P.O. Box 7306, Syracuse, New York 13261, and an application packet will be mailed.  Questions should be directed to Ms. Christa Glazier of the Congressman's Syracuse office staff at 315-423-5657.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut manages its own selection process based on a nationwide merit-based competitive process; no congressional nominations are required.  Interested applicants must apply directly to Coast Guard Academy's Admissions Department.
