WASHINGTON, D.C. - Third District Congressman Jon Porter issued the following statement today in response to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s announcement that she will retire from the Supreme Court:

“Justice O’Connor has served our country admirably for twenty-four years as a member of the Supreme Court, all the while exhibiting a unique sense of political independence.  Her appointment by President Reagan was truly historic, as she forged the way for future generations of women by becoming the first woman to sit on the high court.  Justice O’Connor’s leadership is admired, and her historical legacy will be a role model for all.  I wish her well in her retirement, and look forward to President Bush’s announcement of a nominee to replace her.”

O’Connor said she will leave before the start of the court’s next term in October, or when the Senate confirms her successor.
