WASHINGTON, D.C. - Third District Congressman Jon Porter today announced that he has secured funding for two key Nevada law enforcement initiatives.  The funding comes as part of the conference report on H.R. 2862, the “Science, State, Justice, Commerce, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2006,” which passed the House by a vote of 397-19.

“Nevada law enforcement agencies and the groups that assist them in keeping us safe play a vital role in our communities,” said Porter.  “Since arriving in Congress, it has been a priority of mine to provide them with the funding and tools necessary to continue protecting the citizens of Nevada.”

Porter secured $700,000 for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.  These funds may be used to provide personnel, equipment, training, technical assistance, and information systems for more widespread apprehension, prosecution, adjudication, detention, and rehabilitation of offenders who violate state and local laws.

Porter also secured $100,000 for a Juvenile Justice Program demonstration project, which will be used to upgrade “A Child Is Missing”—Nevada’s capabilities.  “A Child Is Missing” is a not-for-profit organization that assists law enforcement agencies in the first few hours a child or elderly adult is reported missing.
 
“Funding these initiatives is one more step we can take to ensure the safety of our residents, as well as visitors to Nevada,” Porter concluded.

The conference report now awaits action in the Senate before going to the President for his signature.
