PORTER TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING ON NURSING EDUCATOR SHORTAGE

LAS VEGAS, NV - Third District Congressman Jon Porter invites the public to attend a House Subcommittee on Select Education field hearing to address the shortage of nursing educators.  The hearing will be held at 10 AM on Friday, December 2, on the Nevada State College campus.

The hearing will focus on how a shortage of nursing faculty in higher education contributes to the national nursing crisis.  The National League of Nursing estimates that more than 125,000 qualified applicants were rejected by nursing programs in the 2003-04 academic year, with the shortage of nursing faculty being one of the most commonly cited factors behind this trend.  According to a study conducted by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, by 2020 there will be a national shortage of more than 800,000 registered nurses.

This is the second in a series of hearings the Subcommittee has scheduled to address this issue.  The first, hosted by Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave (CO-04), will be held on Wednesday, November 30, in Greeley, Colorado.
