U.S. REPRESENTATIVE PORTER - Statement on President's State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Jon Porter (R-NV) had this to say about President Bush’s State of the Union Address:

“Tonight’s State of the Union Address laid out specific goals, immediate and long-term, for how and where President Bush will lead America, in his second term.

The state of the union is indeed strong.  The President’s address reinforced to the nation that while our economy is moving in the right direction, more work needs to be done.  Our economy is strong, and getting stronger.  Just last year, 2.3 million jobs were created.  In Nevada alone, our unemployment is at an astonishing low rate of 3.8 percent.  We need to exercise fiscal discipline, and put forward a budget that reflects our times and meets our goal of cutting the deficit in half by 2009.

The President called on Congress to fulfill its obligation and achieve results for the American people rather than passing problems on to future Congresses and future generations.

The President spoke directly to the American people and to Congress about Social Security and offered more details on how to move the debate forward.  I appreciated his remarks on why we need to strengthen the Social Security system, and why it's necessary that we confront this problem today.  The fact is, in just over a decade, the system will pay out more than it will take in.  The President expressed his willingness to work in a bipartisan manner to strengthen social security.

The President spoke eloquently about the importance of working to advance the spread of freedom and democracy.  We have seen progress in Afghanistan and Iraq with free elections, and there is a renewed hope of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

This State of the Union comes during a time of war.  I support the President’s commitment to fighting the War on Terror.  We must continue to support our men and women in the armed forces, and provide them with the resources they need to combat the threat of terror.  And we need to do all we can to protect our homeland.”
