PORTER PRAISES HOUSE PASSAGE OF DEATH TAX REPEAL

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Jon Porter (R-NV) today applauded House passage of the permanent repeal of the death tax.  H.R. 8, the Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act of 2005, passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 272 to 162.

On passage of the bill, Rep. Porter said, “The Death Tax is fundamentally unfair.  Death should not be a taxable event.”  He added, “The death tax is an unnecessary burden to families left behind after the passing of a loved one.  I hope that once signed into law, it will bring peace to those families left behind.”
“I am a proud cosponsor of this legislation.”  Rep. Porter stated.  “The death tax is a form of double taxation.  Small business owners and family farmers pay taxes throughout their lifetime.  At the time of death, they are assessed another tax on value of their property.”

H.R. 8 removes the expiration date of the death tax repeal from existing law. The current law would have put the death tax back in place in 2011. By passing this bill, Congress has allowed families to facilitate long-term financial planning.  Enactment of the Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act promotes fairness and simplification by giving taxpayers the certainty they deserve.
