PORTER ASSISTS THE NEVADA CANCER INSTITUTE - House Passes Conference Report on Supplemental Appropriations

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jon Porter (R-NV) today announced the passage of language which will allow certain hospitals, like the Nevada Cancer Institute to apply for federal funds for increased research and program development.

“I am glad to have been able to work with Chairman Lewis and Chairman Regula in this common sense effort.  Because of a narrow interpretation of the law by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Nevada Cancer Institute was unable to access these important federal dollars until now,” Porter said.  “We must work to ensure that the Nevada Cancer Institute continues to receive the dollars necessary to make it a vibrant source of research and clinical assistance for cancer victims throughout the state of Nevada and the nation.”

“While my goal was to pass a clean supplemental, Congressman Porter has demonstrated the great need for this change in current law.  I believe that his continued work on behalf of the Nevada Cancer Institute will provide Nevadans, and all Americans, with improved understanding of and treatment for the devastating cancers that affect so many,” said Representative Jerry Lewis (R-CA), Chairman of the full Appropriations Committee.

The language that was added to the Supplemental Appropriations bill will redefine those hospitals which are eligible for loans under the Health Care Infrastructure Improvement Program.  Under current law, the Nevada Cancer Institute was unable to access these important federal dollars because of technicality in the original language.

The House passed the Supplemental Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2005 today and the Senate is expected to take action on the conference report next week when they return from recess.  It will then go to the President for his signature.
