TIBERI STATEMENT ON NEXT STEP FOR STABILIZATION

Washington, Sep 30 -

Statement from U.S. Congressman Pat Tiberi (R-OH) on the next step in negotiation on an Economic Stabilization bill:

"Later this week when Congress reconvenes, it's important that Republicans and Democrats, Senators and Representatives, come together and get back to the table to continue our work to protect families across the country.  The issues surrounding our economy are too important to fall victim to inaction in Washington D.C.  At the same time, they are also too important to fall victim to inadequate, hastily made decisions that don’t address the core issue and expose everyday taxpayers to unacceptable risk.

"I believe there is a better way forward than the choice that was presented to Congress on Monday.   The fact of the matter is many Central Ohioans are already facing economic hardship.  On top of that, availability of credit that allows people to get a loan for a car to drive to and from work, access student loans for the education that will help them succeed, and allow small business owners to expand, or in some cases just meet payroll, is tightening.

"We need to address these problems.  But we need to address them in a manner that will truly free-up capital and credit at the local level, allowing institutions in our neighborhoods to continue to serve us.  Injecting billions of taxpayer dollars into Wall Street and hoping it will eventually trickle down is not enough.  We must also be sure that hard-working American taxpayers are not left holding the bill.

"In the coming days I will sit down with my colleagues and work to do what's right for communities and taxpayers across the country.  I believe we can reach an agreement, in a civil fashion, that truly addresses our economic problems and provides stabilization and economic security while protecting taxpayers."
