Social Security-Congressional Participation

I have heard statements from some who believe that members of Congress do not pay into Social Security. That view is incorrect. The 1983 amendments to the Social Security Act required federal employees who were first hired after 1983 to participate in Social Security. These amendments also required all members of Congress to participate in Social Security as of January 1, 1984, regardless of when they first entered Congress. That includes me. I have paid into the Social Security system the entire time I have been in office. What I am not participating in is the Congressional Pension program. I do not feel that taxpayers owe me a lavish retirement package just because I voluntarily decided to seek elective office. For more information about congressional pensions, please select Issues on this website and then Congressional Pension Plan.
