“Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act”

Statistics show that people of all ages, especially young children, are killed or injured in preventable, non-traffic related accidents every day. Understanding that responsible, reasonable changes to new vehicles can make the difference between life and death, John and Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) introduced legislation to protect children by improving rearward visibility, enhancing power window safety, and fully implementing brake shift interlocks.

On February 28, 2008, President Bush signed the “Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act” into law, but not before an aggressive campaign for passage that included the commitment of Farmington, New Hampshire resident Packy Campbell and the consumer safety group KIDS AND CARS. Campbell, whose son Ian died tragically in an April 2004 accident, other families from across the nation, and this safety group pulled together in support of this bill and deserve our recognition and thanks for their work.

This law provides direction to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to enact changes in the following areas: power window anti-strangulation mechanisms; backover warning systems; brake shift interlocks; death/injury database for non-traffic, non-crash incidents; and child safety information system.
