JEFFERSON COUNTY
The city of Birmingham is located in Jefferson County. Birmingham is Alabama's largest city with a population of 242,820, and the 54th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Congressman Bachus is proud to represent part of Jefferson County. Birmingham and the metropolitan area is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering and higher education. Located within Congressman Bachus' district are the cities of Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Trussville, Hoover, Gardendale, Pleasant Grove, and Hueytown.
Jefferson County is home to the University of Alabama Birmingham. UAB is home to the highly regarded University of Alabama School of Medicine, ranked #24 by US News and World Report for top medical schools. Also Located in Jefferson County are Samford University, Birmingham Southern College, and Miles College.
For sports fans, the Birmingham Barons play at the Hoover Met. The AA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, the Barons become a national media darling during Michael Jordan's stint with the club in 1994. The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame is located in Birmingham. Of ESPN's top 100 athletes of the century, nine are from Alabama. Bruno's Memorial Classic is played annually as part of the PGA Champion's Tour at the Greystone Golf and Country Club. Birmingham is also home to the oldest standing baseball stadium in America, Rickwood Field.
Jazz fans can visit the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in Birmingham. Other museums and attractions in the area include the Birmingham Zoo, Alabama Theatre, Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Birmingham Museum of Art, Southern Museum of Flight, Tannehill Historical State Park, and Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.
The South's best meeting and convention value is found in the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. The 19,000 seat arena is home of the Birmingham Steeldogs of the Indoor Football League. The Arena has hosted major sporting events including the Southeastern Conference, the Sunbelt Conference and the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournaments.
