Kuhl Khronicle - June 2008

Washington, Jun 6 -
Randy Kuhl / New York's 29th District

JUNE 2008 NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends,

It seems astonishing that we are already in the 6th month of 2008. And as the spring showers come to an end and the humidity rolls in, summer has officially hit the 29th District of New York.

But before your summer vacations, BBQs, and children’s camps begin, I hope you take a little time to look over a project that I unveiled in May. The "Fix Washington Project" is an opportunity for you to share your legislative ideas with me. Have you ever thought, “there ought to be a law for this,” well here is your chance to finally get that idea into law. More details are listed below but you can also visit http://kuhl.house.gov/fixdc for more information.

Also, I will be holding office hours on Monday, June 16th in Chemung, Schuyler, Yates, Ontario, and Monroe Counties. Click here to see my schedule. Hopefully you’ll be able to spare a few minutes to come and meet with me personally. And if you can’t make the trip but would still like to discuss any concerns or questions, please drop me a line, either through the 29th District website (http://kuhl.house.gov) or via U.S. Mail at P.O. Box 153, Bath, NY 14810.

Thank you and if there is anything I can be helpful with -- whether it's dealing with an agency of the federal government, answering questions about federal aid and programs, or even providing a tour of the U.S. Capitol next time you're in Washington -- please don't hesitate to call on me through any one of my offices.

Regards,

Randy

The "Fix Washington Project"
I am a proud third-generation resident of Upstate New York. My grandfather, my father, and now I, have lived in and loved this area for over a century. And through the many years of living in this area, I have learned numerous things about the people and place that I call my home. One of the most important is that the residents of the 29th Congressional District are among the best and brightest in America and have many great ideas on how to solve our nation’s problems.

Introducing the House Veterans’ Mental Health Caucus
The headlines read, “Increasing mental illness among veterans” “Post-war trauma cases up,” and “Combat veterans need help to survive.” Since 2003 approximately 40,000 troops have been diagnosed with mental illnesses. The number of U.S. troops suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder jumped by 50 percent in 2007. The Army recently reported that there were 115 suicides in 2007, the highest number since it began keeping records. But veterans’ mental health needs do not just affect those troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. It was reported that more Vietnam-era veterans eventually committed suicide than the 58,000 soldiers lost in combat.

The First Annual CPR/AED Awareness Week

This week is the first annual National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Awareness Week. The purpose of National CPR/AED Awareness Week is to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED. During this week, the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, and National Safety Council chapters across the U.S. will conduct CPR/AED demonstrations and instructional classes, host events, and provide educational information on the importance of CPR and AED training.

Farm Bill Update
On May 14, 2008, the House passed the conference agreement on the 2008 Farm Bill (H.R. 2419, the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008) with my support. Many of you know that the Farm Bill has endured a lengthy process over the last two years. From the field hearing in Canandaigua in June of 2006 to the many Agriculture Committee and Subcommittee hearings held in Washington D.C. in 2007 and the six temporary 2002 Farm Bill extensions, the writing of this Farm Bill has been quite the legislative experience. I want you to know how appreciative I am for your input during this process. Agriculture is one of the most important industries in New York State, and it is critical that we do whatever we can to help these small farms thrive in our economy.

Finding Real Solutions to the Energy Crisis

All around the country, families are feeling the squeeze of skyrocketing gas prices.  AAA reports that the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline has reached $3.98, while the price of a gallon of diesel stands at $4.78. And while we have sat around and waited for the ‘commonsense plan to lower gas prices’ that Speaker Pelosi promised us over two years ago, the price of gasoline continues to skyrocket.

In May, I grew tired of waiting and joined together with my House Republican colleagues to form the Republican Energy Agenda, which will deliver solutions to the current energy crisis and skyrocketing oil prices.  Read More
