Education Reform

The 29th District of New York is home to many of the best schools, colleges, and universities in the state and in the nation.

As a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor and former Chair of the New York State Senate's Committee on Education, it is important for me to know what's going on in our schools districts and to hear from constituents about their ideas for improving our education system.

This year, Congress is planning to reauthorize the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001.  As a member of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education, I am playing a substantial role in this process and am fully committed to a thorough reauthorization of this bill.  In Washington and back at home, I have been meeting with constituents to hear their recommendations regarding the reauthorization.  I am most interested in doing all I can to improve student achievement under the law, and I plan to support efforts to expand state and local flexibility under the law and enhance competitiveness initiatives to ensure a strong workforce.

The Higher Education Act is also slated for reauthorization later this year.  I strongly believe that higher education has become an increasingly important tool for success in the 21st century.  More Americans from all walks of life are pursing a college education in both traditional and non-traditional settings.  All students should have access to the same programs, benefits, and services no matter which sector of higher education they choose to pursue.  As a member of the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness, I will continue to seek input from the stakeholders in the higher education community and work to craft a measure that meets the needs of our nation’s next generation of college students.

Throughout the 110th Congress, I will remain committed to working with my colleagues to ensure that every student in America graduates from high school with the skills that he or she needs to enter college or the global workforce.
