Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the most important industries in New York State. In the 29th District alone, there are over 6,000 family farms, covering more than 1.2 million acres and employing thousands of workers. The farm economy generates over $3.6 billion annually for New York State, including $360 million per year in the 29th District. It is critical that we do whatever we can to help these small farms thrive in our economy.

When I was elected to Congress, I joined the House Committee on Agriculture because of our district’s rich and deep tradition in farming. As a Member of the Committee, I serve on the Horticulture and Organic Agriculture Subcommittee. I am also the co-chair of both the House Northeast Agriculture Caucus and the House Dairy Caucus.

During the 110th Congress, I hope to address some of the most pressing issues facing New York State farmers, such as the Milk Income Loss Contract program; funding for specialty crops like apples, wine, and juice grapes; enhanced conservation efforts; nutrition and food assistance; and renewable energy. Through my service and leadership on the Agriculture Committee, I look forward to representing the agricultural interests of our farmers as Congress continues to craft the next farm bill.

During my first term in Congress, I created an Agricultural Advisory Committee, chaired by John Hicks of Ontario County, with whom I routinely maintain contact. I hope that you will share your thoughts with me on the important agricultural issues facing the 29th District. If you have a background in agriculture and are interested in joining the Advisory Committee, please contact my office in Bath at (607) 776-9142.
