PORTER TO FOCUS ON JOB CREATION IN NEVADA

Ways and Means Committee focuses on how state and local governments can cope in a painful economy

Washington, DC- Congressman Jon Porter will return to Washington tomorrow for an important hearing in the House Committee on Ways and Means focusing on cooperative measures between the federal government and state and local governments during uncertain economic times. The hearing will address challenges facing Nevada families and State and local governments during the economic downturn and will work to provide solutions to improve economic security, create new jobs and invest in Nevada and our domestic infrastructure.

States like Nevada are struggling with record budget shortfalls.  These deficits are preventing critical investment in areas such as health care, education and infrastructure; measures that would improve the quality of life for Nevada families.  These challenges are compounded by depressed financing mechanisms brought on by instability in the financial markets.  As a result, governments are increasingly unable to meet obligations for critical care or execute contracts for improvements to roads, bridges and railways.

“Every Nevadan is hurting as a result of our economy,” said Porter. “We are in a recession and families are looking to Congress for solutions to create new jobs and bring growth back to our state.  This hearing will examine the growing challenges facing struggling households as well as State and local governments to determine how we can best restore economic security throughout Nevada and the United States.”
