On June 6, 1944 the United States and its allies embarked on the largest air, land, and sea invasion ever undertaken. This massive effort included 5,000 ships, 10,000 airplanes, and over 150,000 American, British, Canadian, Free French, and Polish Troops.

During the 50th anniversary of this historic event, the French Government awarded the Jubilee of Liberty Medal to American servicemen for their participation in the Battle of Normandy. The Medals were minted at the request of the Regional Council of Normandy to be presented to Veterans attending the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landing.

Eligible Veterans include all who served in Normandy from June 6, to August 31, 1944, comprising land forces, offshore supporting personnel, and airmen flying cover overhead. The French Government is no longer issuing these medals; however, they are still available if presented by a Member of Congress.

The brave men and women of our Armed Forces answered the World’s call to arms and along with our allies, defeated one of history’s most treacherous and murderous dictators. In just a few short years, our peaceful nation was able to amass a fighting force unlike any the world had ever witnessed. As is true today, the heart of this force was comprised of average American men and women who embodied the American spirit and the ideals of liberty and justice for all.
