| In addition to his firm non-proliferation stance, Rep. Markey is committed to ensuring the security and oversight of nuclear weapons, nuclear reactors and nuclear materials. In the 109th Congress, Rep. Markey joined with Sen. Clinton to push through an amendment mandating a cradle-to-grave, national tracking system for materials that could be used to make a dirty bomb as well as other security measures for these materials, and authored legislation included in the 2005 Energy Bill to enhance security at civilian nuclear facilities. Rep. Markey also supports government distribution of potassium iodide pills to anyone that lives within 20 miles of a nuclear plant.
