Has Nation's Highest Unemployment Rate - Congressman Jim Langevin today sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reiterating his strong support for a new stimulus measure to extend unemployment benefits and spur job creation. Rhode Island’s jobless rate, currently the highest in the nation, continues to grow.

Langevin Supports Extra Unemployment Benefits for Rhode Islanders - Congressman Jim Langevin joined a bipartisan majority today in voting for H.R. 6867, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act. The vote comes on the same day a new report indicates that 159,000 jobs were lost in September – the biggest decline since March of 2003. The bill passed by a vote of 368 to 28.

Langevin Fights for Taxpayer Protection in Financial Rescue Bill - Congressman Jim Langevin joined a bipartisan majority today in voting for the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, a proposal for addressing the crisis in the financial markets. The bill passed by 263-171.

Statement on Emergency Economic Stabilization Act - Madam Speaker, we’re here today with the unenviable task of considering H.R. 3997, the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act.  During this difficult economic crisis, I am proud of this Congress for coming together at a critical moment to reach a bipartisan compromise to rescue our financial markets and, indeed, our entire economy.  However, no one is celebrating today about the tough decisions that had to be made.

Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Statement - Madam Speaker,  I rise in strong support of H.R. 5244, the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights Act.  As a cosponsor of this legislation, I believe it is a sensible approach to reforming major credit card abuses and improving consumer protections for cardholders.

Statement on Comprehensive Energy Act - Madam Speaker,  I rise today in strong support of the Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act, and I would thank to thank the Democratic Leadership of the House of Representatives for bringing this critical bill to the floor.  In my home state of Rhode Island, the high cost of oil and gas have become the top concern for families and businesses struggling to keep up in today’s economy.  This legislation promotes short term solutions to increase supply of domestic oil and gas, while establishing a long term national energy policy that invests in the development of renewable energy resources.
