Educator Resources

Library of Congress: Teachers Page
The ideal starting point for educators.  Selecting the “Learning Page” icon provides the viewer with access to tutorials, interactive activities, Webcasts and more than 80 teacher-tested, standards-based lesson plans.  Lesson plans and activities are categorized by grade level and subject, and are available on a variety of topics ranging from the drafting of the Constitution to the Civil War to literature and poetry to the women’s movement and civil rights.  There is something here that every educator can use in his or her classroom.

Library of Congress: Veterans History Project (VHP)
Home of the largest oral history project in American history - the Veterans History Project (VHP).  The VHP provides another excellent opportunity for educators to engage their students in learning about history while simultaneously participating in a service learning opportunity. Nearly 60,000 individual veteran’s stories are housed at the Library.

The VHP collects and preserves accounts of wartime service including letters, photographs, diaries, maps and other documents from American wartime veterans from WWI to current conflicts.  Students participating in the VHP through their schools have the rare opportunity to interview U.S. wartime veterans, hear personal recollections of their service to their country and ultimately have the interviews they conducted archived at the Library of Congress.  Toolkits and other materials to help educators and their students get started are located on the Library’s Web site at www.loc.gov/vets/kit.html.
