Digital Television Conversion

Federal law requires that on February 17, 2009 all full-powered television broadcast stations cease broadcasting in analog format and begin broadcasting exclusively in digital format, also known as DTV.

Congress mandated the DTV conversion for two reasons. First, DTV will provide improved picture and sound quality as well as provide consumers with more programming options through multiple broadcast streams. Second, by ceasing analog broadcasting a wide range of frequencies will be freed up so they can be utilized for public safety communications such as police, fire, and emergency rescue.
