VA Launches New System to Improve Access to Veterans Benefits

If you are a veteran or have a friend or family member who is, you might be interested to know of a new way for veterans to apply for Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits.

In July, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it had launched a website to help veterans and survivors submit electronic applications for benefits.  The system is called VONAPP (Veterans ONline APPlication), and it enables claims to be filed online for VA Compensation and Pensions, Education, Health, and Vocational Rehabilitation.  However, applicants still have the option of filing their claims the traditional way on paper.

This new system gives veterans and their families more options while making the process more efficient and saving government resources.  Claims completed online and filed using VONAPP will carry the same power of attorney as regular signed paper claims, but the agency expects the new system to reduce the number of incomplete or illegible filings.

Veterans and survivors are guided through the application process by an interactive program called AutoForm that offers a range of help screens as well as a checklist at the end.  Applicants can complete their claims in one session, or in several, and will have access to previously submitted claims should they need them for their own records or reference.  The completed forms will be automatically directed to the appropriate VA agency.

Our servicemen and women, and military veterans, have sacrificed greatly to protect us – now we have an obligation to serve them by facilitating their well-being and protecting their interests in areas where government service is appropriate.  The new VONAPP system will help streamline access to several important services.

The VONAPP website is located at: http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp. Further information about the system is also available by toll-free phone, at (800) 827-1000, or you can always contact my office at 402-438-1598 or toll free at 866-725-5255 for assistance.
