HONOR FLIGHT A PROUD EVENT

Washington, DC (May 06, 2008) - Congratulations to all involved with the Emerald Coast Honor Flight. Such heartwarming endeavors don't come along often, but by all accounts it was a huge success.

The picture of aging World War II veterans, visiting their service's memorial in Washington, D.C., and receiving the thanks and acclamation of their fellow citizens for their long-ago answer to the call of service is something we can all cherish.

Particular thanks are due to those who made it possible.

That includes Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Chumuckla, who conceived of and pushed the idea of the Emerald Coast Honor Flight as part of the national Honor Flight program, and served as honorary chairman of the board of directors.

It includes those whose donations helped pay the bills, including top sponsors Baptist Health Care and Humana Veterans Healthcare Services, and a variety of other businesses and individuals.

It also includes individuals and groups volunteering to help, including the Marine Corps League and the medical personnel who volunteered to accompany the veterans.

As the ranks of our World War II veterans dwindle — some 1,200 a day are being lost — there has been a resurgence in interest in making sure that those who have served their country in the military understand that their fellow citizens are grateful.

No doubt in part it stems from the unpleasant reception many Vietnam-era veterans got upon returning from an unpopular war. It has fed the determination to ensure that people understand that no matter their opinion about a conflict such as Iraq, they should honor those who serve because they are doing their duty in service to their country. They don't give the orders, they follow them.

Here's how it's put at the Emerald Coast Honor Flight Web site (www.emeraldcoasthonorflight.com):

"Throughout history, our nation has turned to our military to protect others so that we may enjoy the freedoms that we cherish today. These brave men and women were not making decisions about the right or wrong of war; they were following orders and doing what they were told. We owe so much to these veterans whose sacrifices can not be captured in a few words, many paying the ultimate sacrifice for their country, many carrying scars that will remain for the rest of their lives."

The Honor Flight is one small way to tell them "thank you."
