MILLER CALLS ON PELOSI TO DENOUNCE GROUPS’ ATTEMPT TO GROUND BLUE ANGELS

Washington, DC (June 08, 2007) - Congressman Jeff Miller (R-FL-01) today called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-08) to support the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels annual performance in San Francisco and to denounce the attempts by CodePink, Global Exchange and Veterans for Peace, Chapter 69 to ban the Blue Angels from performing the annual Fleet Week flyover.
“I am outraged that Veterans for Peace, Global Exchange and Code Pink would even attempt to ban the Blue Angels,” Miller said. “This is just further evidence that the rest of the country doesn’t share San Francisco values.”
Veterans for Peace takes issue with the pro-military message and the recruiting efforts that come along with the annual visit as well as what it refers to as the “noise pollution.”
CodePink has launched an online petition, signed by more than 500 people to date, calling on leaders to end the flyovers for reasons of public safety, air pollution and fuel waste.
CodePink, Global Exchange and Veterans for Peace are working with Supervisor Chris Daly on a San Francisco Board of Supervisors resolution to address concerns over the Blue Angels. Paul Cox, a Vietnam veteran and member of the Veterans for Peace said the resolution would establish that city leaders and the public are not in support of having the Blue Angels.
“We can then take the next steps we have to legally stop them,” Cox said.
“This is not about safety, noise pollution or saving fuel,” said Miller. “This is about being anti-military and anti-American.”
Miller said he is considering introducing legislation supporting the Blue Angels and the military’s other demonstration teams.
