MILLER: KEEP DETAINEES AWAY FROM WOUNDED MILITARY PERSONNEL
|
|
Washington, DC (March 20, 2007) - Congressman Jeff Miller (R-FL-01), member of the House Armed Services Committee, today introduced an amendment preventing the treatment of wounded soldiers within fifty miles of any facility housing former Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Miller offered the amendment during the House Armed Services Committee’s markup of H.R. 1538, the initial legislative response to substandard conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The amendment failed by a 27-33 vote.
“Our men and women who have bravely fought and were wounded in service to this nation should not be disgraced and humiliated by being made to share facilities or treatment centers with the enemy,” said Miller. “The members of our Armed Services deserve the best care available – both physical and mental. Detaining Kalid Sheik Mohammed at the same base where our wounded are being treated is not in the best interest of our servicemen and women’s mental health.”
Some Democrats including Defense Appropriations Chairman John Murtha and Congressman Jim Moran have suggesting closing the detention facilities at Gitmo and relocating the terrorist suspects to military facilities along the East Coast. Quantico, Charleston, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and the Norfolk Naval Station have been suggested as possible relocation sites. Still other possibilities include the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C., and Fort Gordon, Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, all in Georgia.”
