MILLER: 46TH TEST WING WILL STAY PUT

Washington, DC (September 26, 2006) - Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Jeff Miller (R-FL-01) today announced that language included in the fiscal year 2007 Defense Appropriations bill conference report prohibits funds from being used to transfer test and evaluation programs from Eglin Air Force Base (AFB).
“This language makes it crystal clear that Congress does not want the Air Force Test and Evaluation Mission to be compromised,” said Miller. “This is a Northwest Florida issue, but it is also a national security issue. Once we educated other Members of Congress to this fact, it became easier to get the language in the bill.”
Congressman Miller and Congressman Allen Boyd, along with Senators Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson, were able to attach language to the 2007 Defense Appropriations Act that prevents the Air Force from using funds to move or cut Test and Evaluation missions or facilities from Eglin, AFB.
“Eglin has assets that are not replicated anywhere else,” Miller added. “It took forty years and hundreds of millions of dollars to create the most advance test facilities in the world. It doesn’t make good sense, for the military or the taxpayer, to make a short-sighted, knee-jerk decision to get rid of it.”
The FY 2007 Defense Appropriations bill must still be given a final vote by the House and Senate before being sent to the White House for signature. The House is expected to take up the $447.6 Billion measure this week.
The exact text of the language included in the conference report reads:
“(C) None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this Act may be used to transfer from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, to any other location, or otherwise to divest from that base, any test and evaluation facility or test and evaluation activity that as of the beginning of fiscal year 2007 is located or conducted at that base.”
