MILLER CRITICIZES DURBIN AND PELOSI COMMENTS

Washington, D.C. (June 21, 2005) - Congressman Jeff Miller (R-Fl-01) participated in a press conference yesterday to respond to the Democratic Leadership’s statements about U.S. troops and the war in Iraq. The transcript follows:
“I’m Jeff Miller. I represent the 1st District, which is the panhandle of Florida, home to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Whiting Field, Air Force Special Operations Hurlburt Field, Eglin Air Force Base and Duke Field.
I, too, am here to express my displeasure on the statements from the leadership from the Democratic Party, both in the House and the Senate, last week.
It's becoming very apparent to me that what is actually going on is the Democrats are watching the polls. And every time the public opinion begins to appear to be swinging downwards on the Iraq war, they want to come forward and make a statement that drives it further down.
To me, that is a sign that they do not want to see success in this particular war on terror. And I don't think that we -- those of us that do support the men and women of the military -- want to have people standing up on Capitol Hill and making the statements that we have witnessed over the last week.
I fully expect that there will be more this week. I put a newsletter out today on Senator Durbin's comments, and basically I said that he was trying to spin his way out of the comments that he made, and he did not actually say that our troops were like Nazis; he did not say that our troops were like Soviet gulags; nor did he compare them to Pol Pot.
Actually, I say that if you used the very same spin that Senator Durbin is trying to use on the floor, I could use the same spin today back on him and basically say if you didn't know that a United States senator had in fact said what was said in the record, you might think that it was Baghdad Bob or a member of the Taliban that had said it.”
