FUNDING FOR NEW VETERANS’ CLINIC AT EGLIN OBLIGATED
Clinic will help deliver promise of better care for Vets

Washington, D.C. (April 21, 2005) - Congressman Jeff Miller (R-FL-01) today announced that the Veterans Integrated Service Network ("VISN") 16 passed budget authority to local VA officials, allowing design and construction of a new Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) at Eglin Air Force Base to begin. VISN 16 today made $350,000 available for design of the $4 Million clinic. Construction is expected to begin in Fiscal Year 2006.

“This new clinic is an extraordinary victory for our veterans in Northwest Florida,” Miller said. “The Emerald Coast is home to one of the largest concentrations of veterans in Florida and the nation. It doesn’t make sense for them to drive all the way Pensacola for primary health care.”

“We have an obligation to the men and women who have served and defended our country. Having a Community Based Outpatient Clinic at Eglin Air Force Base will ensure Northwest Florida’s deserving veterans have convenient access to proper medical care,” added Senator Martinez. “I commend Congressman Miller for his hard work in making the CBOC a reality.

The new veterans’ clinic at Eglin was first proposed by Congressman Miller in June of 2002, following the visit of then-Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs Anthony Principi to Northwest Florida.

Congressman Miller continues working with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to expand co-sharing facilities throughout the country. The clinic at Eglin Air Force Base, along with the new Joint Ambulatory Care Center (Super Clinic) in Pensacola, are at the cutting edge of innovations in veterans’ care and exemplify a model for the nation.

“This represents an important milestone in the VA providing healthcare services for veterans in Okaloosa and neighboring counties,” said Andy Welch, Associate Director of Outpatient Clinic Management. “We look forward to completing the design this fiscal year and getting the construction started in early fiscal year 2006.”
