Retirement Security
Social Security – An Overview
"I will never vote to raise the retirement age, privatize Social Security, or reduce Social Security benefits to retirees and near retirees. It is a fundamental principle that Americans have the right to a safe, secure retirement." – Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite
Ever since I began my career as a public official, whether
it was serving as a County
Commissioner, a State
Senator, or today as a United States Congresswoman, I have prided myself on
meeting the needs of my constituents and being an independent voice on their
behalf. On this page you should find
information that explains the challenges facing Social Security, and why we
need to strengthen it for the future.
Congress continues to face the challenging task of ensuring
the long-term viability of Social Security.
Instead of being pushed into a hasty and ill-informed decision, I
continue to take the time needed to evaluate all the available options and
ideas that are presented. Unlike some of
my Democratic colleagues who have dug their heads into the sand and are
unwilling to admit that Social Security has serious long-term issues, I
recognize that something needs to be done to ensure that our children’s and
grandchildren’s Social Security benefits will be there for them in the future.
As Social Security recipients across Florida found out this October, the
cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2008 is one of the smallest in recent
memory at 2.3%. Many seniors have asked
me what can be done to guarantee a more realistic COLA for next year’s increase. I tell everyone who calls to join me in
supporting H.R. 2032, the Consumer Price Index for Elderly Consumers Act. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and I introduced
this bipartisan legislation to guarantee our seniors a much needed COLA
increase in their Social Security checks each month. Seniors need a pricing index that takes into
account the unique goods and services they purchase, such as healthcare and
prescription drugs, and our bill does just that.
As the Member of Congress representing the greatest number
of Social Security beneficiaries in the nation, no issue is more important to
me than this one.
I will continue to keep an open-mind on proposals to ensure
Social Security’s solvency, promote proposals to give you an adequate Social
Security COLA, and protecting your benefits from going to illegal immigrants
and Mexican nationals.
