“I am very proud of having obtained federal funds for these critically important programs that have significantly aided the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine to expand its medical research possibilities and the quality of health care for our entire community and the nation as a whole. I will continue to work diligently in the U.S. Congress to obtain much needed federal funds for research and other important projects in our community,” said Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

During this morning’s event at the Ryder Trauma Center, the President of the University of Miami, Donna Shalala, and the Dean of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., thanked Congressman Diaz-Balart for his leadership and commitment to securing these important federal funds for medical research in our community.

Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart has a long history of successfully obtaining needed federal funds for the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. The funds have significantly aided the University in expanding its medical research and the quality of health care for our entire community.

Total federal funds obtained by Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart - $6.8 million: FY04-$1.5 million, FY05-$1.5 million, FY06-$1 million, FY08-$2.8 million.

This funding is used for the Army Trauma Training Center (ATTC) at the Ryder Trauma Center situated in the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. The ATTC has functioned as the national training center for U.S. Army Forward Surgical Teams (FSTs) since 2001. Monthly, the ATTC conducts 14-day training program for deploying FSTs in order to improve clinical skills and teamwork. Since January 2001, the Army Trauma Training Center, in conjunction with the Ryder Trauma Center, has trained over 25 forward surgical teams and more than 650 Army personnel in active duty and reserve components - 2/3rds of all forward surgical teams in the U.S. Army.

Bascom Palmer Miami Center for Ophthalmic Innovation Research Programs

Total federal funds obtained by Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart – FY08-$2 million.

This funding is used for the Miami Center for Ophthalmic Innovation (MCMI). A large percentage of active military personnel and veterans, are affected by three major blinding diseases of the retina and optic nerve: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. As a result of current advances in surgical and pharmacologic therapeutics, vision loss due to all these diseases can be halted or even reversed if the disease is detected early.

The Center for Research in Medical Education (CRME)

Total federal funds obtained by Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart – $796,000: FY04-$650,000, FY08-$146,000.
This funding is used for pre-hospital and emergency health care that currently trains over 15,000 course registrants per year at over 325 agencies in Florida and 230 in other states in cardiac life support, trauma, pediatrics, stroke, heart attack, advanced airway and hazardous materials management. Paramedics are trained to diagnose problems in the field using actors to play the role of patients. Important current initiatives are The Emergency Response to Terrorism and to Catastrophic Incidents for First-Responders, for which CRME is the designated lead statewide training center for the Florida Department of Health and for the Miami Urban Area Security Initiative. The Center's curriculum is disseminated to Florida's Community Colleges, and the paramedics trained at the Center respond to the 911 calls of millions of Floridians. CRME also trains U.S. Army Forward Surgical Trauma Teams prior to their front-line deployment.
