Immigration

With an estimated 11 to 12 million immigrants now illegally residing in the United States, the need for a reasonable approach to immigration and border security reform is clear.

A large number of immigration reform proposals have been introduced, varying widely in their scope and policy implications.

I will continue to advocate for rational, balanced immigration reform that ensures:

- Safe and secure borders
- Enforcement of existing law
- Accountability for those who break the law
- Economic justice for hardworking Americans
- Compassion for innocent victims
- An effective paperwork process

Members of the House of Representatives have worked diligently with the Bush Administration to reevaluate current U.S. immigration policy and to strengthen the nation’s borders. On December 16, 2005, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005.

The legislation would restore accountability and respect for immigration laws by authorizing the removal of illegal aliens currently residing in the country and stiffening penalties against aliens repeatedly attempting to enter the country illegally, smugglers trafficking human beings across the borders, alien gangs and employers who hire illegal workers. The bill would also increase cooperation between local and federal law enforcement and construct fencing in areas where the most illegal crossings and drug smuggling activity occur.

As a legal immigrant myself, I deeply appreciate America’s immigrant heritage and longstanding role as a land of freedom and opportunity. The House bill would help to uphold those deeply rooted values by protecting immigrants who play by the rules and enter the country legally in pursuit of the American Dream.

I will continue to advocate for a reasonable and responsible approach to reform as Congress further debates this complex and challenging issue.
