Every spring the United States House of Representatives sponsors an exciting arts event for high school students. The event, “An Artistic Discovery,” is a unique competition that provides Members with the opportunity to showcase the artistic talent of students within their districts, and thereby acknowledge our nation’s gifted young artists.

Each high school in the Second Congressional District in Michigan is invited to participate in this competition. Twelve art pieces are selected from the entries by a panel of local art professionals. The first place piece is sent to Washington D.C. where it will hang in the United States Capitol tunnel for one year. The remaining pieces, along with a copy of the first place piece, will tour the district for the next year.

We also partner with a local business to design and produce a yearly calendar utilizing the winning artwork, and then choose a nonprofit to be the recipient of that calendar. All artists whose work is published in the calendar will receive copies of the calendar for family and friends.
