October 8, 2008 - Secretary Chertoff and Justice Department Deputy Attorney General Filip signed an agreement with Slovak Republic Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Robert Kaliňák on enhancing cooperation to prevent and combat crime.
"I commend our Slovak partners for this important step toward an expanded and more secure Visa Waiver Program," said Secretary Chertoff. "Sharing law enforcement information is fundamental to combating transnational crime and discouraging criminal and terrorist travel." Read more
October 6, 2008 – The U.S. Fire Administration announces National Fire Prevention Week, which runs October 5-11 and focuses on the prevention of fires in the home. Each year, fire departments respond to over 400,000 residential fires. Annually more than 3,500 people die from fires in their own homes. The most common causes of home fires result from cooking, heating, electrical malfunction, smoking materials and candles. Read more at the USFA
October 2, 2008 – ICE arrested 1,759 gang members, associates, criminals and immigration violators in a four-month Operation Community Shield operation that targeted violent street gangs and criminal associates in 53 cities across 28 states. Of those arrested, nearly 1,500 were gang members, associates or those otherwise criminally charged. Read more at ICE.gov
