Statement of Senator Barack Obama on SIDS, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Barack Obama today joined thousands of American families in recognizing SIDS, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month during the month of October. In June, Senator Obama introduced the Preventing Stillbirth and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Act of 2008, which would enhance public health activities related to understanding and preventing stillbirth and sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID).
"Every year, too many American families experience the heartbreak of stillbirth and sudden unexpected infant death. We must do everything we can to work to prevent these tragedies, and recognizing SIDS, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month is an important way to broaden public knowledge.
"I was proud to introduce critical legislation earlier this year to launch a national registry for both stillbirth and sudden unexpected infant deaths, which would help facilitate understanding of the root causes, rates, and trends of these deaths. My legislation will also provide information on how to prevent sudden unexpected infant deaths and stillbirths to every American family.
"I applaud the hard work of the many support groups, organizations, and advocates that raise awareness about these tragedies every day."
