Wilson Statement on Iraq Study Group Report

Media Availability Today in 318 Cannon Office

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, chair of the House Subcommittee on Technical and Tactical Intelligence, will be available for comment regarding the Iraq Study Group report at a media availability today at 3:30 p.m. in her office, 318 Cannon House Office Building.

Rep. Wilson today released the following statement:

“The Iraq Study Group was established by Congress to provide a review of the situation in Iraq and make recommendations going forward.  The group is made up of ten very experienced people and deserves serious consideration.

“The situation in Iraq is grave and has deteriorated over the last six weeks.  In particular, some actions and failures to act by the unity government in Iraq create doubts about the ability and the will of the Iraqi government to address sectarian violence and control the militias.

“We need to very clearly define the vital American interests in the region and make sure that we have the strategies and resources in place to successfully pursue those interests.

“Particularly in light of the advance billing given to the Iraq Study Group work, I found their report to be a little disappointing.

“Their recommendations range from the blindingly obvious, to the naïve and simplistic, to the interesting but underdeveloped.

“I was expecting a steak dinner and we got hors d’oeuvres.

“There are more ideas out there and many views about the way ahead.  Over the next thirty days, I will be reviewing the situation in the Middle East and engaging with those inside and outside of government.  I expect to release publicly my views on the way forward in early January.”
