Closed for Renovation The Museum, along with its Hands on Science Center, closed on September 5, 2006 for major architectural renovations and is scheduled to reopen by summer 2008.
History and Mission The Hands On Science Center offers visitors a deep and practical understanding of the role science plays in American history and daily life. Here visitors can do science in an entertaining and relaxed setting. In 2004, over 110,000 people enjoyed the combination of facilitated laboratory activities and opportunities for independent exploration.

Web Activities
“You Be the Conservator: Looking at Objects Inside and Out” explores the creation and preservation of painted wood carvings of Catholic saints, called santos, by consulting artists, an art historian, and a conservator, and by using scientific conservation tools. This Web activity, produced in cooperation with the Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education, is also available in Spanish.
