WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) received assurances today
from Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Commissioner Doris Meissner
that the controversial "hubbing" proposal has been dropped. The meeting
took place in Schakowsky's Capitol Hill office.
From
the start, immigrants rights advocates and Representative Schakowsky opposed
the hubbing plan, which would have relocated, based on ethnicity, people
slated for deportation and those seeking asylum in the United States.
"The
plan posed a serious threat to the civil and legal rights of immigrants.
I am pleased to hear first hand from Commissioner Meissner that it has
been scrapped. It was an ill-conceived plan and I look forward to
working with her and all of the other stakeholders in coming up with a
system to deal with deportees and asylees that is fair, humane, and efficient,"
said Schakowsky.
"My
district has more different immigrant populations than any in the state.
Ninety percent of the problems that constituents bring to my office relate
to the INS. I am determined to be an effective advocate for them,
and will continue to seek cooperation from the INS," added Schakowsky.
