WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) during a news conference
today applauded the introduction of the Human Rights Information Act of
1999. Representative Tom Lantos (D-CA) introduced the legislation.
The
following is Representative Schakowsky's statement.
"Congressman
Lantos, thank you for providing the moral leadership within our own government
on the question of human rights, and thank you to those with us today who
have paid such a dear personal price in the struggle for human rights.
"The
Human Rights information Act (HRIA) is about practicing what we preach.
It is about the United States government stepping up to its stated commitment
to ending human rights abuses throughout the world and supporting those
who are seeking the truth.
"How
much longer will families have to suffer the agony of not knowing the fate
of their loved ones? If we can end the waiting, then we must.
How much longer will perpetrators live in freedom without having to face
the consequences? The U.S. must not shield torturers and murderers.
I traveled to El Salvador and spoken with the mothers of those who disappeared,
and heard the stories of the victims of unimaginable torture. We
must not be complicit in further victimizing the victims.
"Swift
and comprehensive declassification of all relevant U.S. agency documents
is critical to fostering peace and democracy in Guatemala, Honduras, and
the world."
