WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued the following statement
in response to the passage of the VA, HUD and Independent Agencies appropriations
bill.
"Even
though the House approved the VA, HUD and Independent Agencies appropriations
bill, one hundred and eighty seven members of the House of Representatives
today stood their ground and opposed harmful cuts in our nation's housing
budget. The President has promised to veto this bill and we were
successful in gaining enough votes to sustain a veto.
"Without
question, this funding bill would result in hundreds of thousands of families
and seniors across America not having access to affordable housing.
Cities like Chicago would lose tens of millions of dollars for community
and economic development efforts, environmental clean-up, and homeless
assistance.
"I
am proud to have joined my colleagues in opposing these cruel cuts.
We sent a message to millions of Americans that the housing needs of all
citizens and the economic growth of communities is on our list of priorities."
Schakowsky
is a member of the Banking Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity.
