WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) hailed the approval of
bipartisan campaign finance reform legislation. The Shays/Meehan
bill will limit "soft money" and regulate issue advertisements paid for
by special interests.
Below
is Schakowsky's statement.
"Those
who supported real campaign finance reform tonight should be proud of what
was accomplished. Together, we were able to turn back the attacks
on meaningful reform and deliver to the American people some measure of
what they have been asking for year after year. Our constituents
demand that we get big money out of politics and special interests out
of the election business. The Shays/Meehan bill is an important step in
the right direction.
"American
taxpayers have been paying a heavy price for not having campaign finance
reform. They pay through higher utility rates and health care premiums
and weaker consumer and environmental protections. Special interests
with deep pockets contribute millions during elections and in return get
what they want.
"The
House has passed this bipartisan reform measure. Now, the United
States Senate should follow the will of the people who are demanding integrity
in the political process."
