WASHINGTON,
D.C. -- U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced that the Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $5,216,228 million to
homeless assistance providers in the 9th Congressional District under the
Supportive Housing and the Shelter Plus Care Programs. The total
amount awarded to Illinois is $54 million, of which $30 million has been
granted to Chicago.
"These
are much-needed funds that will help in our efforts to find permanent shelter
and housing for the homeless. During these winter months, we must
work to ensure that no one is left out in the cold," said Schakowsky, who
is a member of the Banking Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity.
The
funds provided through HUD's Supportive Housing Program will be used by
organizations to assist homeless families and individuals. The organizations
will also use the funds to acquire, build, renovate and operate facilities
that serve the homeless.
