WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today called on the nation's
largest online auction site to immediately remove all KKK paraphernalia
and other materials symbolizing hate.
Below
is Schakowsky's letter to eBay President Meg Whitman.
Meg

Dear
Ms. Whitman:
Please
remove the item #216745373, an allegedly rare 1925 Ku Klux Klan Robe and
Helmet, from sale on your website.
I
represent the Rogers Park and Skokie communities, which were recently victimized
by a horrible hate crime spree that resulted in the shooting of several
Jewish men and the death of Ricky Byrdsong. I am appalled that you
would allow someone from the Chicago community to sell this emblem of hate.
I am further horrified that a selling point is that it was used during
another hate crime. One of this country's greatest assets is its
diversity and tolerance. However, by profiting from this item, you
undermine this country's strengths for your own pecuniary gain. We
should expect more from our corporate citizens. Consequently, I urge
you to remove this item and all similar items from your website and establish
vetting procedures to ensure that this mistake isn't repeated.
Thank
you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Jan
Schakowsky, Member of Congress
