WASHINGOTN,
D.C. – "I want to thank Congressman Lantos and the members who are here
today for their continuing commitment to matters of importance to the Jewish
and international community. I also want to thank Yona and Miriam
Baumel for having the strength and courage to be here with us today and
for the past 17 years.
"Yesterday,
the President signed into law this very important bill. This is a
critical step in our quest to gather information and locate the whereabouts
of Zachary Baumuel, an American citizen, and Yehuda Katz, and Zvi Feldman,
Israeli soldiers missing in action for 17 years.
"Now,
we have an opportunity, through diplomatic talks and as a condition of
future cooperation and assistance, to put an end to this long and troubling
episode.
"It
is imperative that the United States protect its citizens, no matter where
they may be located. Whenever American citizens or allies of the United
States are taken during conflict, we must do everything possible to obtain
their release or information as to their fate.
"The
truth is out there and we must find it. We must find it for the sake
of the families of these brave men and all other families who are still
searching for their loved ones."
