WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Juanita Millender-McDonald
(D-CA), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and other House members today called on
Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) to hold hearings on the nomination of former
Senator Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) to be ambassador to New Zealand.
Helms is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Below
is Schakowsky's statement.
"Senator
Moseley-Braun deserves to have her day before the Senator Foreign Relations
Committee. I am confident that the Committee would approve her nomination
and am certain that the Senate would confirm her.
"Unfortunately,
she may not get that chance because of one man, Senator Jesse Helms.
If Senator Helms continues to refuse to listen to reason and common sense,
then a qualified woman may not get the opportunity to serve her country.
Whatever personal qualms Senator Helms may have, the fact remains that
Senator Moseley-Braun is a respected and dedicated public servant with
a distinguished career of service. Senator Helms should rise above
the fray and give Senator Moseley-Braun the chance to come before his committee
and personally answer his inquiries.
"Congress
will soon adjourn for the year. Senator Helms' delaying tactics are
transparent. He must hold hearings as soon as possible and give Senator
Moseley-Braun the respect she deserves."
