"BODYSCAN"
SYSTEM WOULD REDUCE INSTANCES OF INTRUSIVE STRIP SEARCHES
CHICAGO,
IL – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) joined Representative Danny
Davis (D-IL) and U.S. Customs Commissioner Raymond Kelly at O'Hare Airport
to unveil a new X-ray machine to be used as an alternative to intrusive
searches. The BodySearch system uses advanced technology to detect and
reveal any objects carried under clothing.
The
Representatives also received a tour of the U.S. Customs facilities at
O'Hare and an overview of the recently updated passenger procedures.
The new procedures include increased supervisory oversight, policy and
cultural training, legal counsel and passenger assistance.
"Some
passengers at O'Hare have suffered the indignity of strip searches and
experienced the fear of detentions for very questionable reasons.
I am hopeful that those days are behind us and that we can show the world
that Chicago is a city that welcomes its visitors," Schakowsky said.
"I
applaud Representative Danny Davis for his leadership on this issue and
thank Commissioner Kelly for his efforts. We are showing that we can protect
passenger safety and treat people with the respect they deserve.
I believe that what we have today is a good start and an important step
in that direction," Schakowsky said.
