WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today joined thousands
of people from around the country to protest the infamous United States
Army School of the Americas (SOA). The protest was organized to commemorate
the 10th anniversary of the slaughter of six Jesuit priests at the hands
of SOA graduates.
Schakowsky,
who delivered a resounding speech in Georgia to thousands of individuals
representing labor, students, war veterans, faith-based organizations and
human rights activists, visited El Salvador in 1989 just before the murder
of the six Jesuit priests. Representative Lane Evans (D-IL) organized
the trip.
"This
is the 'School of the Atrocities'. At American taxpayers' expense,
foreign soldiers get a first-rate education on how to assassinate, torture,
kidnap and abuse their own people. Proponents claim that the school
is all about strengthening and preserving democracy. Sadly, we have
the bodies and the survivors to refute their claims," Schakowsky said.
"Now
we hear that some changes are in the works. Cosmetic surgery is not
enough. The only change we want is for this institution of violence and
brutality to close its doors forever," Schakowsky added.
Earlier
this year, the House of Representatives, in a bipartisan vote, approved
an amendment to prohibit funding for SOA. However, the Senate refused
to accept the House's position and SOA received full funding this year.
Schakowsky is a cosponsor of legislation in the House that would permanently
shut down SOA. Companion legislation has been introduced in the Senate.
"We
have made progress over the years, and our victory in the House, even though
it was short lived, is a testament to all of your hard work. Let
us build on that accomplishment and keep up the pressure. Soon, justice
will prevail, and we will truly be able to say nunca mas, never again,"
Schakowsky said.
