WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today called on the President
to sign into law H.R. 1175, a bill to locate and secure the return of Zachary
Baumuel, an American citizen, and other Israeli soldiers missing in action.
Schakowsky,
a cosponsor of HR 1175, said, "Protecting the lives and ensuring the welfare
of American citizens here and abroad is the duty of our government.
That is why I urge the President to sign this important bill that will
help bring a closure to this long and painful episode."
The
bill calls on the Department of State to raise the issue of Zachary Baumel,
Yehuda Katz, and Zvi Feldman immediately with the appropriate governments
and authorities. Furthermore, the bill calls on the U.S. government
to take into account the cooperation of any government or authority in
this matter when issues of economic assistance are discussed.
"These
brave soldiers have been missing for 17 years. For the sake of their
families, the United States must redouble its efforts to locate them,"
Schakowsky said.
