WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today joined her colleagues
to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The
House approved H.R. 576, a bill that would update the Flag Code to include
the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday on the list of days that Congress
especially encourages that the United States flag be displayed. Currently,
all other federal holidays are included on this list.
"The
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. surrounds us, and today the House
of Representatives has taken steps to ensure that Dr. King's message of
peace, justice, and civil equality is never forgotten," Schakowsky said.
"I
am proud to have been an original cosponsor of this important legislation.
It will help keep the memory of his life's work and achievements alive
forever by encouraging all Americans to display the flag on every third
Monday in January," Schakowsky added.
