Financial Services Committee Assignment
by Congressman Mike Ross

February 2, 2001

“This week I was honored to be one of only three Democratic freshman members of Congress to receive an appointment to the newly created House Committee on Financial Services.  This new committee combines the responsibilities of the former House Banking Committee with the securities and insurance jurisdiction of the Commerce Committee, making it one of the most highly sought after assignments.

“I want to be an economic ambassador for the people of south Arkansas.  With the recent news that several companies in the Fourth Congressional District are cutting jobs, I plan to do all I can to bring more economic development to the region.  As a member of the Financial Services Committee, I will be able to work on issues of importance to all Americans, particularly residents of the Fourth District, in areas including economic development, defense production, affordable housing, financial aid to commerce and industries, as well as the banking industry.

“I look forward to working with members of the committee to promote New Markets legislation, which will bring jobs and economic opportunity to areas such as south Arkansas that have not yet fully experienced the benefits of our nation’s recent prosperity.  I want to fight for adequate, affordable housing for our working families who are struggling to make ends meet.  And I will support the Community Reinvestment Act, protection of the safety and soundness of the banking system, the integrity of financial markets, and the strongest privacy protections possible.”
